Domhnall Gleeson wears a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

Owen Carver is the billionaire bankrolling the treasure hunt in Guy Ritchie's Fountain of Youth, recruiting John Krasinski's seasoned art thief under the guise of being terminally ill. What he actually wants, the film holds back until late, is the fountain for himself. Domhnall Gleeson plays him with a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon on his wrist, and the costume department chose it as a portrait of the man. One side is a clean white dial with rose gold numerals and a small window onto the tourbillon, complex but contained. Flip the case and the reverse is fully skeletonised, exposing the 62-part tourbillon. Costume designer LouLou Bontemps described the logic as two sides of the blade, two different characters, for a man hiding who he really is for the whole movie.

Gleeson's favorite detail is one he doubts anyone catches. He has said he loved that the watch had two faces even though the audience never really sees it, and that nobody gave him the 150,000 dollar prop when the shoot wrapped, which he called a disgrace. He read the rest of Owen's wardrobe the same way: in the last scenes the character wears a small pin that marks him as an Irish speaker, and Gleeson doubts Owen speaks a word of it, a man dressing himself in culture with nothing behind it.

The film sorts its whole cast by wrist. Krasinski's Luke wears a Master Control Chronograph Calendar on a worn leather strap, framed by the costume team as his father's watch handed down. Natalie Portman's Charlotte, a gallery curator, gets a rose gold Reverso Classic Duetto, and the agents chasing them all wear Omega, the brand Bontemps's research filed under armed forces. The Reverso she considered singular: there just is not another watch like it.
