The Expendables (2010) gives General Garza one of its ugliest frames: the dictator of Vilena holding a beaten prisoner's bloodied face in one hand while Paine, the American muscle beside him, levels a pistol, and a row of red-bereted soldiers waits in the dark behind them. Church's briefing had already reduced the man to a sentence of work. A general named Garza has overthrown the half-ass government of a little island in the Gulf, and the client wants him dead.
The script gives Garza more than that sentence suggests. A rogue former CIA officer named Munroe came to Vilena with money and turned the island into his own drug operation, with the general as its uniformed front. When Munroe decides Garza's daughter Sandra has to die for helping the Americans, blood or not, and calls it the price of doing business, Garza refuses with one line. You don't kill your familia. By the end the general has turned on his partners, rallying his soldiers to kill this American disease, and Munroe kills him for it.
Stallone cast the part off a tape. David Zayas spent almost fifteen years as a New York City police officer before acting full time, sent in an audition, and got the role; he prepared, he said, by studying the bigger-than-life dictators, Chavez, Fidel Castro, Idi Amin. Television viewers know him as Angel Batista across every version of Dexter, and before that as Enrique Morales in Oz.
Through all of this a watch rides on Garza's left wrist, and the interrogation frame catches it: a pale dial under a polished case, a dark band, sitting beside the heavy signet ring on his finger. Watch media pinned Stallone's wrist down to the reference: a blacked-out Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante, PAM00332, the split-seconds chronograph he wore as Barney Ross. Garza's dress watch, plainly there in the same kind of close-up, drew no such notice. A fresh search turns up no claim for it from any source, reputable or otherwise, so unidentified is what it stays.
