David Andrews appears briefly as Pete Conrad, commander of Apollo 12 and the third human being to walk on the moon. His Omega Speedmaster Professional is not a prop department invention but historical fact. NASA qualified the Speedmaster in 1965 after subjecting it to extremes of temperature, vacuum, shock, and vibration that destroyed every other watch in the test, and every astronaut who flew afterward wore one, Conrad included.
Ron Howard's Apollo 13 uses Conrad's cameo early on to establish what a successful mission looks like: he is relaxed, confident, joking, a man who went to the moon and came back fine. The Speedmaster on his wrist is the same 42mm hand-wound chronograph with the black tachymeter bezel that the Apollo 13 crew wears. The real Pete Conrad wore his on the lunar surface in November 1969. The film simply had to get it right, and it did.
