As James Bond, Daniel Craig wore modern Omega Seamasters, Planet Oceans and Diver 300Ms and Aqua Terras, current-production references supplied through one of the longest-running brand partnerships in cinema. As Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson's Knives Out, he wears the opposite: a vintage Omega Seamaster De Ville in gold, with a gold pie-pan dial, on a textured dark brown leather strap. Same brand as Bond, and the inverse of everything Bond stands for.
Blanc is everything Bond is not, soft-spoken and Southern and fond of cable-knit sweaters, more interested in listening than fighting. Where Bond gets a 42mm dive watch on a NATO, Johnson puts Craig in a small round vintage case, a dress watch for a gentleman detective, the kind of piece a man inherits rather than buys. It reads as quiet taste, which is exactly how Blanc works. He solves the case by being underestimated. The trilogy keeps the thread going, too: the vintage De Ville here gives way to an Omega Seamaster 1948 in Glass Onion, each dress watch a little smaller and quieter than anything Bond ever strapped on.
