Knives Out is Rian Johnson's 2019 whodunit, with Daniel Craig leading a cast that runs through Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, and Christopher Plummer as the murdered patriarch Harlan Thrombey. Chris Evans plays his grandson Ransom Drysdale, billed on the film's own poster as the trust fund playboy. Most of the attention went to his cream cable-knit sweater. The watch is worth a look too.
It is a Rolex GMT-Master, the model with the red and blue 'Pepsi' bezel. Rolex built the GMT-Master in 1954 with Pan Am so that pilots on long-haul routes could keep a second time zone on the dial, the two colors splitting day from night. The earliest bezels were bakelite, which cracked, so Rolex switched to aluminum. Ransom's has the black dial and the date under its small cyclops bubble, but instead of the usual steel bracelet it sits on a smooth brown leather strap.
What stands out is the strap. On brown leather instead of its steel bracelet, the GMT-Master reads less like an aviator's instrument than a dress watch, close to the opposite of how Rolex built it to be worn.
