The most relaxed we ever see Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades Freed comes on a honeymoon afternoon. She lies prone on a striped poolside lounger, a paperback open in front of her, and tips a pair of oversized sunglasses down just far enough to look back over the lens. Married now to a man with a helicopter and a recording studio for an apartment, she has spent three films draped in clothes and jewelry worth more than most people's houses. So it is worth noticing what sits on her resting forearm here: not a statement piece, but a slim round dress watch on a plain black leather strap, a pale dial inside a thin metal case.
It has the look of a Daniel Wellington, the minimalist fashion watch Filip Tysander built into an Instagram empire after founding the brand in 2011, the sort of inexpensive, interchangeable-strap piece that was on every other wrist by 2018. For a character whose whole arc is an ordinary woman living inside extreme wealth, a modest leather-strap watch on a sunny lounger is exactly the right note.
