On a wall somewhere in The Terminal List, the 2022 series, James Reece has pinned up the people who tried to kill him. A city map and a grid of surveillance photos, faces clipped and taped in rows. Chris Pratt plays Reece, a Navy SEAL lieutenant commander who comes home from an ambush that wiped out his platoon, then loses his family, and spends the rest of the season working his way through that wall one name at a time. In this frame he is standing in front of it in a Costa t-shirt, head down, hands busy with something we cannot quite see. On his left wrist is a small black dive watch on a black nylon strap.
The watch is a Resco. That name means very little to most people and a great deal to a particular few. Resco Instruments was started in 2009 by a man named R.E. Smith, who was an active-duty Navy SEAL at the time, and the company has stayed deliberately small ever since, better known inside Naval Special Warfare than outside it, the sort of brand that quietly produces watches for individual units. The choice of a Resco for a fictional SEAL is, as the site Watches of Espionage put it, one of the show's deepest cuts. It is not the obvious military prop. It is the watch a real SEAL might have bought for himself.
In this particular frame the dial sits in shadow, turned half away from us, so you cannot read the hands or the bezel. What you can read is the shape, a blacked-out diver, and the strap, a black nylon NATO that loops back under itself the way those straps do. The strap is the part that settles it. Reece wears more than one black watch across the season, including an Oris on a rubber strap, but the Resco is the one that rides on a NATO. So this is his BlackFrog, almost certainly, worn the way the people it was built for tend to wear it.
