Chris Evans wears a Casio MDV106

Ari Levinson runs a diving resort on the Sudanese coast of the Red Sea. The resort is a front. Levinson, played by Chris Evans, is a Mossad officer, and the hotel exists to move Ethiopian Jewish refugees through Sudan and on to Israel, the real early-1980s operation the film dramatizes as Operation Brothers. He wears a dive watch, which on a man whose cover is a dive resort is either a small joke or a coincidence. Nobody involved in the film has said which.

The watch is so minor a detail that the only people who ever identified it were hobbyists on a watch forum, working from screen grabs. Their first guess was a vintage Rolex Submariner, the default watch for a 1980s spy. Then they looked harder. The triangle at twelve was an equilateral, wrong for a Sub; the minute hand had the wrong arrowhead; there was no Mercedes hour hand. One of them placed it instead: 'It is not quite right, but it really reminds me of a Casio MDV106. I am wondering if it is some variant.' The rest agreed. Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, was wearing a fifty-dollar Casio.

The MDV106, nicknamed the Duro, is one of the cheap watches the internet cannot stop recommending: a 200-meter diver with a screw-down crown that Casio sells for about fifty dollars, bought by people who want the silhouette of a Submariner without the four figures behind it. It is also decades too new for 1981. The forum that identified it had ruled out a real Sub on the way to a watch that exists to look like one.
