Bradley Cooper wears a Casio DW-6600-1V

Bradley Cooper gained close to forty pounds to play Chris Kyle in American Sniper, Clint Eastwood's 2014 film built from the Navy SEAL's own autobiography. Kyle is the most lethal sniper in American military history, with 160 confirmed kills across four tours in Iraq. The watch on Cooper's wrist is a black Casio G-Shock, the DW-6600-1V.

The first G-Shock came out of a small failure. In 1981 a Casio engineer named Kikuo Ibe dropped a watch his father had given him and watched it shatter, then spent two years and more than two hundred prototypes building one that wouldn't break. That watch reached stores in 1983. The DW-6600 came later, in the mid-1990s, and it kept the same logic: it cost under a hundred dollars, ran for about two years on a single battery, kept time without winding, and held its seal to 200 meters. Somewhere along the way the G-Shock pushed the Rolex Submariner out of the standard SEAL kit.

None of that came from a costume department. Kyle had described the watch in his autobiography. 'On my wrist, I'd wear a G-Shock watch,' he wrote. 'The black watch and its rubber wristband have replaced Rolex Submariners as standard SEAL equipment.'
