Michael Bay directed Pearl Harbor, a $140 million war film that uses the 1941 attack as the backdrop for a love triangle. Ben Affleck plays Captain Rafe McCawley, an Army Air Corps pilot who volunteers for the Eagle Squadron in Britain, gets shot down, and is presumed dead. Josh Hartnett plays Captain Danny Walker, his best friend who falls for Rafe's girlfriend while he is gone. Kate Beckinsale plays the nurse between them. The film was critically savaged but made $449 million worldwide.
McCawley wears a Hamilton Khaki Field, which is historically reasonable for a WWII-era American military officer. Hamilton supplied watches to the U.S. military during both World Wars, producing over one million timepieces for the armed forces during WWII alone. The Khaki Field descends from those military-issue pieces. The version in the film has a green dial on a canvas strap, consistent with what an Air Corps pilot might have worn in 1941. Hamilton's military heritage makes the brand choice right even when the specific modern reference is an anachronism.
