Ben Affleck plays Buddy Amaral in Bounce, an advertising executive who gives his plane ticket to a stranger so he can stay behind for a one-night stand, then watches that plane crash with no survivors. Don Roos directed this 2000 romantic drama, which turns a meet-cute premise into something darker: Buddy's guilt over surviving drives him to alcoholism, and his recovery program leads him to seek out the widow of the man who took his ticket. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Abby, the widow, and Affleck and Paltrow were dating at the time, which gives their scenes together a charge the script does not always earn. The film asks whether a relationship built on a lie of omission can survive the truth, and Affleck plays Buddy as someone who knows he is doing something wrong but cannot stop himself. Bounce was a modest success but got overshadowed by Affleck's flashier work in the years that followed. Roos, who wrote The Opposite of Sex, brings a similar interest in characters who behave badly and have to live with the consequences. His watch has not been identified.
