The still on this record shoots Leo from below, black combat shirt against an empty sky, and the watch on his left wrist is unmissable: a chunky black G-Shock with olive accents. Anthony Mackie plays Leo in Mikael Hafstrom's Outside the Wire (2021), a Netflix war film set in 2036, an android military officer who looks and talks human, paired with Damson Idris's Lieutenant Harp, a drone pilot being punished for disobeying orders, on a mission into a demilitarized zone to find a doomsday device. The G-Shock fan site G-Central identified the watch from the promotional photos and the teaser: a Mudmaster GWG-1000-1A3, black bezel, olive green band.
The Mudmaster comes from G-Shock's Master of G line, built for debris-filled environments: mud and vibration resistant, water resistant to 200 meters, solar charged, radio time-synced, with a Triple Sensor reading altitude, bearing, and temperature, all for about 800 dollars. Oracle Time, reviewing the film's wrist gear, asked the obvious question about an android keeping time: "Some cranial implant, we'd assume." Then it gave the costume its due, calling the choice "quite possibly the perfect bit military-spec wrist gear." The Mudmaster family works steadily in screen soldiering; The Old Guard had put the GG-1000 variant on Marwan Kenzari's wrist the year before.
