The second watch on Anne Hathaway's con artist in The Hustle, worn a few scenes before the Ballon Bleu, is a Cartier Tank in yellow gold. The Tank is the older idea by a long way. Louis Cartier designed it in 1917, during the war, taking the shape from the Renault tanks he had seen at the front: the two raised bars down the sides of the case are the treads, the case between them the body of the tank seen from above. Cartier lore says the first one went to General Pershing, though that part has never really been pinned down.
More than the design, the Tank has its wearers. Jackie Kennedy's sold at auction in 2017 for over three hundred and seventy thousand dollars. Andy Warhol owned one and freely admitted he never wound it: 'I wear a Tank because it's the watch to wear.' Muhammad Ali wore one too, an elegant, almost delicate watch on the heavyweight champion of the world. So did Princess Diana. It is the rectangle to the Ballon Bleu's circle, and the older of Josephine's two Cartiers by ninety years.
