Anne Hathaway wears a Cartier Ballon de Cartier

In a boutique scene in The Hustle, you can read the watch on Anne Hathaway's wrist without trying: a round Cartier with a white dial, Roman numerals, and a two-tone gold-and-steel bracelet. It is a Ballon Bleu, and it is the second Cartier her con artist wears in the film. A few scenes earlier, Josephine Chesterfield has on a yellow-gold Tank. Between them they cover the whole range of Cartier's watch design, the rectangle and the circle.

Cartier introduced the Ballon Bleu in 2007. The name points at the crown: a blue sapphire cabochon set into the side of the case, tucked under a curved metal guard so that it seems to float. The case is round and domed front and back, a deliberate break from the rectangular watches Cartier had been built on, the Tank above all, in production since 1917. Josephine wears one of each.
