The best joke in The Card Counter is that Mr. USA is Ukrainian. Alexander Babara plays him as a poker player who has wrapped himself in the American flag, literally, in a stars-and-stripes tank top and a USA cap, with two men behind him holding signs and chanting "USA" between hands. He is William Tell's main rival on the casino circuit, and Paul Schrader uses him as the loud, oblivious opposite of Tell, the haunted ex-interrogator Oscar Isaac plays, who tapes his motel furniture in plain white sheets and barely raises his voice.
Mr. USA accessorizes the way he does everything else, which is loudly. There is a chain on one wrist and a watch on the other, a round steel watch with a dark dial on a steel bracelet, flashing as he pushes his chips around. The brand never shows, and no one has identified it. Tell's watch in the same film has been pinned down to the reference, a Piaget Polo S in steel. The loud man across the table wears one nobody has bothered to name.
