In collector circles the Seiko 6139-7100 is known as the Bobby Deerfield, after this film. Al Pacino plays Bobby Deerfield, an American Formula One driver on the European circuit, in Sydney Pollack's 1977 drama, and the watch he wore became the model's nickname. Pacino plays Deerfield as a closed, careful man who begins to come apart when he falls for Lillian, a dying woman played by Marthe Keller. The film disappointed at the box office and is seldom counted among Pacino's best, yet the Seiko on his wrist has carried its name ever since.

The 6139-7100 is one of the Helmet-cased versions of Seiko's 6139, the automatic chronograph the company launched in 1969, the same year as the Zenith El Primero and the Heuer and Breitling consortium's Chronomatic, in one of the closest races in watchmaking. The Bobby Deerfield reference has a white dial, a single chronograph sub-dial, a day-and-date window at three o'clock, and a tachymeter scale on an inner ring. A Japanese chronograph was an unexpected choice in 1977, when Heuer and Omega owned the racing world, which may be why collectors remember it.
