Christian Gudegast's Den of Thieves (2018) is a two-and-a-half-hour heist movie that plays like Heat reimagined for the tactical gear generation. Gerard Butler plays Big Nick O'Brien, a corrupt LA County Sheriff's detective tracking an elite robbery crew led by Pablo Schreiber's Ray Merrimen. O'Shea Jackson Jr. is the wheelman Donnie Wilson. 50 Cent plays Enson Levoux, a career criminal and one of Merrimen's most trusted operators. The target is the Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Los Angeles, and the plan requires military-grade precision.
The Casio G-Shock G-9300, also known as the Mudman, is a field watch built for abuse. It has mud-resistant button construction, a digital compass, and Casio's Tough Solar power system, all for around $120. On Levoux's wrist it is a practical choice for a man whose job involves armored car ambushes and prolonged tactical operations. The G-Shock line has been worn by special forces operators since the 1990s because the watches are essentially immune to impact damage, and a bank robbery crew with military backgrounds would gravitate toward the same equipment. There is nothing aspirational about a Mudman. It exists to take punishment and keep running.
