Luca Guadagnino directed Challengers as a love triangle told in reverse, tennis as the metaphor for everything unresolved. Zendaya plays Tashi Duncan, once the best junior player in the country, now a coach managing her husband's career and her own arrested development. Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist play the two men orbiting her, one her husband, one her history. The screenplay is by Justin Kuritzkes, and the film is structured around a tournament match between the two men that Tashi watches from the stands.
Zendaya wears a Cartier Panthère. The original Panthère launched in 1983, designed around a square case and an integrated supple bracelet that moves like chain mail. The proportions are deliberately refined: small case, graduated links, a watch that disappears into the wrist rather than announcing itself. On Tashi Duncan, who moves through the film with the composed authority of someone who was very good at something and has never quite let go of it, the Panthère reads as old-money restraint. It is the watch of someone who does not need to wear her status. She already knows what she is.
