Wilson Bethel wears a Techno Pave

Through the third season of Marvel's Daredevil, Benjamin Poindexter wears the same watch: a wide slab of blacked-out steel on a black strap, on the wrist of a man who keeps everything else in order. Wilson Bethel plays Dex, the FBI sharpshooter who can kill anyone with anything thrown hard enough and who holds himself together with routine, a spotless apartment, and the tapes of his old therapy sessions, played back when the structure starts to slip. Wilson Fisk finds the loose thread and pulls, and the marksman becomes Bullseye.

No source names the watch. The dial does. Propstore sold the screen-used piece as Lot 307, certificate included, the production's blue continuity tape still stuck to the caseback, and a close look under the crystal reads Techno Pave, a blacked-out quartz fashion watch. The dial is busy for something so cheap: a count-up dive bezel numbered to sixty, a tachymeter scale around the rim, and three subdials borrowed from a chronograph, one of them a 24-hour register. The back is plainer and more honest, stamped stainless steel, quartz, water resistant, a serial number, no brand at all.

So a man whose whole life is an exercise in control wears a watch that only imitates a precise instrument. The dive bezel will time no dives, the tachymeter will clock no laps, and the whole watch sells, new, from Techno Pave, for well under a hundred dollars. What actually keeps time is the plain center of the dial, the hours and minutes a man needs to hold to a schedule. The rest is for show, which suits the season: by the end of it Fisk has the FBI's best shot in a Daredevil suit, wrecking the hero's name from inside it.
