Lawrence Kasdan and Barbara Benedek wrote The Big Chill (1983), about seven college friends who gather at a South Carolina house after the eighth kills himself. Kasdan directed, not long after writing The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The ensemble is deep: Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt, Kevin Kline, Mary Kay Place, JoBeth Williams, and Meg Tilly. Kevin Costner was cast as the dead friend, Alex, and filmed flashback scenes, but Kasdan cut all of them except the opening shot of the body being dressed for the funeral.

William Hurt plays Nick, the group's wounded one, a Vietnam veteran and former radio psychologist now dealing drugs and self-medicating his way through the reunion. On his wrist is a two-tone Seiko 7006-8007, a basic 17-jewel automatic with a day-date in a window at three o'clock, the kind of watch Seiko turned out by the million in the early 1970s and sold cheaply through department stores and overseas exchanges.
