In a warm, wood-paneled hotel interior, a bellhop blurred behind him, Wesley Snipes presses a telephone receiver to his ear as Lieutenant Web Smith, the LAPD liaison at the center of Rising Sun. Smith has been pulled onto a killing inside the Los Angeles tower of a Japanese corporation, and he works the case alongside Sean Connery's John Connor, a retired captain steeped in Japan. Philip Kaufman directed the 1993 film from Michael Crichton's 1992 novel, and it drew criticism on release for what some called Japan-bashing.

That phone scene is also where you would look for Smith's watch, and it is exactly where the film withholds it. His hand grips the receiver while the cuff below it sits in shadow under his jacket sleeve, so no case, dial, or bracelet ever comes into view. No reliable source identifies the watch either. A single weak attribution to a Citizen once circulated, but it traced to one unreliable site with no clear shot to back it, and it is not retained here. For now the watch on Smith's wrist stays unidentified.
