Boucheron is a jeweler, not a watchmaker, and the distinction matters. Frédéric Boucheron founded the house in 1858 and in 1893 became the first jeweler to move to Place Vendôme, taking the sunniest corner of the square so the diamonds in his windows would catch the light. Boucheron makes watches the way jewelers do, as extensions of a broader aesthetic rather than mechanical objects admired on their own. The Reflet, introduced in 1947, is the house's signature watch: a curved rectangular case with interchangeable straps and a clasp hidden inside the case, a piece of jewelry that happens to tell time.

Laurent Tirard's Up for Love (Un homme à la hauteur) is a French romantic comedy in which Diane, a successful Paris divorce lawyer, falls for Alexandre, an architect played by Jean Dujardin who stands about four and a half feet tall. Dujardin, who won the Oscar for The Artist in 2012, plays it straight. Tirard co-wrote the screenplay with Grégoire Vigneron.

Boucheron belongs to Kering now, alongside Gucci and Bottega Veneta, but it still trades from the same Place Vendôme corner it took in 1893. On Diane, a divorce lawyer at the top of her field, the Reflet is a quiet, French kind of luxury. Virginie Efira has since become one of the most prominent actresses in French-language cinema.
