Ving Rhames was everywhere in the late 1990s. After Marsellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction and Luther Stickell in Mission: Impossible, he landed Buddy Bragg in Steven Soderbergh's 1998 Out of Sight, another Elmore Leonard adaptation in a decade full of them. George Clooney plays Jack Foley, a bank robber who escapes from prison and kidnaps a federal marshal played by Jennifer Lopez, then falls for her. Rhames's Buddy is Foley's partner and only real friend — the one who plans the jobs, drives the getaway car, and tells Jack when he's being an idiot, which is often.
In this image, Rhames and Clooney crouch behind a car at night during what appears to be the film's Detroit diamond heist. Rhames wears dark clothes, a cap, and glasses, holding a weapon. No watch is visible in the low-light shot. Soderbergh shot Out of Sight with the same cool, nonlinear style he'd later bring to the Ocean's films — Clooney and the ensemble essentially got their audition for Ocean's Eleven three years early.
