Vincent Cassel wears a Rolex Submariner

French intelligence sends four field agents into Morocco to sink a ship. The vessel belongs to a Russian businessman, Igor Lipovsky, who is running weapons to rebels in Angola, and the plan is to blow it up and frighten him out of the trade. Vincent Cassel plays Georges Brisseau, the captain who leads the team; Monica Bellucci plays Barbara, another agent on the operation. Frederic Schoendoerffer shoots Agents secrets as a procedural, heavy on the tradecraft, and the operation that looks controlled on paper starts to come apart once it is underway.

In a restaurant scene with the harbour behind them, Brisseau has a steel sports watch on a steel bracelet, its dial dark, the case the heft of a diver. It is consistent with a steel Rolex Submariner, which is what the one watch-trade write-up on the film calls it. Rolex built its dive reputation on the Submariner, introduced in 1953 with a rotating bezel for timing a dive, a screw-down crown, and water resistance that by this film's day reached 300 metres in the steel reference 16610. The frame is not sharp enough to read the dial, so the identification rests on that visual match and a single source rather than a mark legible on screen.
