Vincent Cassel was 29 when he made The Apartment in 1996, and he already had the restless energy that would define his career. Gilles Mimouni's mystery-romance casts Cassel as Max, a former playboy who has settled down and is about to marry Muriel (Sandrine Kiberlain) when he catches a glimpse of Lisa (Monica Bellucci), the woman he never got over. The sighting triggers an obsession, and Max begins dismantling his stable life to chase a past that may not have happened the way he remembers it. Romane Bohringer co-stars as Alice, and the film treats romantic fixation as a form of self-destruction rather than heroism.
A watch-spotting site identifies Max's watch as a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, the rectangular watch JLC designed in 1931 for British polo players in India who needed a crystal they could protect by flipping the case over. That swiveling case is the Reverso's signature, and JLC still manufactures its components at Le Sentier in the Vallee de Joux. It is a quietly expensive watch, the kind that rewards the wearer rather than announcing itself to the room, though it is not clearly visible in the available stills, so the identification rests on the watch-spotting attribution.
