Vincent Cassel wears a Casio

Underwater (2020), William Eubank's film, drops a drilling crew onto the floor of the Mariana Trench and then takes their station apart around them. Kristen Stewart leads the survivors; Vincent Cassel plays Captain Lucien of the Kepler 822 rig, who walks his people across the seabed in armored pressure suits and, in the end, trades his life so one of them can surface. On his wrist is a Casio, the plain analog-digital kind that costs less than a tank of fuel. It never gets a clean close-up, so the exact model stays out of reach, but it has the look of Casio's solar-powered line. There is an irony the film never names: a watch that runs on sunlight, seven miles down where no light reaches, and one rated to about a hundred meters of depth in a place that presses down with roughly ten thousand. The captain's cheapest piece of gear is also the most thoroughly overmatched.
