Viggo Mortensen plays Nikolai Luzhin in David Cronenberg's 2007 thriller Eastern Promises, a driver and cleaner for a Vory v Zakone crime family operating out of a London restaurant. The prison tattoos covering his body work as a record: in the Vory tradition each one marks a crime committed or a rank earned, which is how the gang reads a man on sight. Naomi Watts plays Anna, a midwife who finds the diary of a dead Russian teenager linking the restaurant's patriarch, Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl), to a trafficking ring, while Vincent Cassel plays Semyon's volatile son Kirill, whom Nikolai keeps in check.

The watch on Nikolai's wrist, the round steel piece visible above his tattooed hand, has been identified by costume and watch enthusiasts as a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control. Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the Master Control in 1992 and named it for the 1000 Hours Control test each watch went through, roughly six weeks of running before it left the factory. The design is deliberately understated: a clean silvered dial, applied baton markers, and a date, with nothing else on it, worn here on a steel bracelet.
