John Carpenter wrote the original screenplay before Halloween made him famous, and Irvin Kershner directed. Faye Dunaway plays Laura Mars, a fashion photographer who begins seeing murders through the killer's eyes as they happen. Tommy Lee Jones plays John Neville, the detective on her case, with Brad Dourif and Raul Julia in support. The film is a piece of late-1970s New York, a thriller about fashion and violence in a city that felt close to the edge.
The watch is identified as a Rolex Explorer II, reference 1655, but only by a single watch blog, which guesses it was Jones's own. Rolex introduced the 1655 in 1971 with a fixed 24-hour bezel and a bright orange 24-hour hand, and marketed it to speleologists, the cave explorers who lose track of day and night underground. A steel sports watch on a steel bracelet does sit on Neville's wrist, consistent with the Explorer II, though the frame is too soft to make out the orange hand and pin the reference for certain.
