Tommy Lee Jones plays Hawk Hawkins in Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys (2000). The premise: four aging former Air Force test pilots, passed over for the space program in 1958 when NASA sent up a chimp instead, finally get to orbit forty years later, when a decaying Soviet satellite needs the obsolete navigation system only Frank Corvin (Eastwood) knows how to run. Eastwood directs and stars alongside Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner.
Hawk is reported to wear a Breitling Navitimer, the pilot's chronograph Breitling introduced in 1952, its circular slide-rule bezel built to work out fuel burn, airspeed, rate of climb and mile-to-kilometer conversions in the cockpit. It became the official watch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the kind of analog instrument an old-school flyer like Hawk would have trained on. The watch is never clear enough on screen to be sure of, though, and by some accounts the crew switch to Omega Speedmaster X-33s once they reach the shuttle. A probable Navitimer in the earthbound scenes is as far as it goes.
