Frank T.J. Mackey sells a self-help program called "Seduce and Destroy" to rooms full of desperate men, and he does it with the energy of a televangelist who knows his product is garbage. Tom Cruise plays him in Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia (1999) as a misogynist motivational speaker whose persona comes apart when a journalist starts asking about his dying father. Cruise earned an Oscar nomination for the role, and it remains some of the best work he has done.
The watch is a Timex Expedition, worn through the "Seduce and Destroy" seminars and the interview that unravels him. Prop Store, which authenticated and sold the screen-used piece, cataloged it as a Timex Expedition Indiglo with a 24-hour dial and a compass turn-ring, fitted to a brown leather strap. It is an inexpensive outdoor watch on a man who otherwise dresses in tailored silk.
