John Woo directed Mission: Impossible II (2000) the way he made Hong Kong action cinema, only with a budget north of a hundred million dollars: slow-motion doves, two pistols at once, motorcycles colliding in midair. Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt chases a stolen bioweapon called Chimera through all of it, and the watch on his wrist is a Casio G-Shock DW-6900-1V, the round-cased digital with three small inset eyes on the dial. The prop was reportedly de-branded for the film, its Casio and G-Shock markings stripped so it read as anonymous field gear rather than product placement.
The DW-6900 is an ordinary G-Shock, shock resistant and water resistant to two hundred meters, with an electroluminescent backlight, the kind of disposable tool an agent would strap on before free-climbing the opening cliff at Dead Horse Point in Utah.
