Egerton plays Dean Karny, the analytical half of the Billionaire Boys Club. James Cox's film about the 1980s Ponzi scheme cast Ansel Elgort as Joe Hunt, the charismatic frontman, and Egerton as Karny, the member who eventually cooperated with prosecutors and testified against everyone else. Karny is the less glamorous role — he is the partner who runs the numbers while Hunt works the room — but in the real story, he is the one who survived, trading testimony for immunity and watching the others go to prison.
A watch is visible on Egerton's wrist throughout, unidentified but consistent with the film's 1980s Beverly Hills wardrobe. Karny was part of a group of wealthy young men who believed they were smarter than the system, and the watches, the cars, and the suits were part of maintaining that illusion. Whatever he is wearing, it is less about telling time and more about belonging to a club where everyone dresses like they have already made their first million, even when the money is coming from a Ponzi scheme held together with charm and spreadsheets.
