Tulsa King sends a New York mob capo to Oklahoma. Dwight Manfredi, played by Sylvester Stallone, walks out of prison after twenty-five years, gets exiled by his own family to build something in Tulsa, and carries his old life west on his wrist: a vintage Piaget Polo in yellow gold.
Piaget launched the Polo in 1979, a slab of satin-finished gold whose case and integrated bracelet run together in a series of raised ridges called gadroons, thin and heavy at once and worn more like a bracelet than a tool. It was the gold watch of the disco era, the piece a certain kind of high roller bought to be seen wearing. Robert De Niro strapped the same model to Ace Rothstein in Casino, which tells you the exact register it plays in.
On Manfredi the Polo is a story about where he comes from. The show treats it as a gift from the crime family, a marker of old debts and old loyalties, and in the second season he hands it to a younger man and cuts the tie on purpose. Stallone is a serious watch collector in his own life, and here he wears gold that reads outer-borough old school, which is most of the joke in dropping the character into Tulsa.
