John Rambo wears a Panerai on his wrist in the Burmese jungle, and it is Sylvester Stallone's own watch. The Panerai PVD Luminor Marina Militare, reference 5218-202/A, is a pre-Vendome piece, made before the Vendome Group acquired Panerai in 1997, when the company still built dive watches in small numbers with a lineage going back to the Italian Navy's combat frogmen. The case is 44mm, coated in matte black PVD, with a spartan dial carrying Arabic numerals at three, six, nine, and twelve.
Stallone directed and starred in Rambo, a return to the character twenty years after Rambo III, set along the Thailand-Burma border where Rambo lives in isolation catching snakes until a group of missionaries pulls him back into combat. The matte black PVD was made for soldiers who did not want a reflection giving away their position, which suits a man living off the grid. The watch was Stallone's own, and his example later sold at auction as the one he wore in the film.
