In Wish Upon, a brawl breaks out on the floor of the school cafeteria and the crowd closes in with phones raised to film it rather than break it up. Clare Shannon (Joey King) is down on the tile trading blows with her bully, Darcie. Sydney Park stands in the ring of onlookers as Meredith McNeil, one of Clare's two closest friends, shouting over the noise with her arms locked across her chest.
John R. Leonetti's 2017 horror film runs on an antique Chinese music box that Clare's father, a dumpster diver, brings home. It grants seven wishes, and the last inscription on the box reads: when the music ends, the blood price is paid. Every wish Clare makes kills someone close to her, and she spends much of the film refusing to believe the box is the cause.
On Meredith herself there is no watch to read. Her wrists are bunched into a buffalo-plaid flannel cuff and a blue knit wrist warmer, and nothing in the crush resolves into a case or a dial. The one watch the frame shows clearly belongs to a classmate a few feet away, a gold case with a black dial, held up on a raised arm to record the fight.
Meredith does not survive the film. The price of Clare's fifth wish, to be the most popular girl in school, is Meredith herself, killed when the elevator she is riding falls thirty floors.
