Melville Crump is a dentist. That's the whole joke. Sid Caesar plays him as a man whose professional precision extends exactly nowhere beyond the chair, a fidgety wreck bullied by his wife and mother-in-law as they barrel across the California desert chasing buried money. In Stanley Kramer's It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), every character is defined by the gap between who they think they are and how they actually behave under pressure, and Crump's gap may be the widest.
Crump wears a gold watch, though the poster art used as the sighting image doesn't show it. The watch fits the character — something a small-town dentist would buy to project respectability. Caesar's genius was physical comedy, and details like a gold watch on the wrist of a man falling apart give his performance its specific flavor of desperate dignity.
