Sean Connery wears a Rolex Submariner

In Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie (1964), Sean Connery plays Mark Rutland, the owner of a Philadelphia publishing company who recognizes his new employee Marnie Edgar (Tippi Hedren) as the woman who robbed a business associate, and responds not by calling the police but by blackmailing her into marriage. Marnie is a compulsive thief with an intense aversion to the color red, and Mark treats her like a puzzle he has acquired the rights to. Diane Baker plays Lil, his late wife's sister, who is in love with him and works quietly against the new marriage. The film divided critics on release and has been revalued upward since.

The watch is a between-the-lines identification. In a date scene at a racetrack, where Mark waves off a stranger who insists on calling Marnie by another name, a steel watch sits under Connery's left shirt cuff, and in clearer frames a rotating bezel shows: a dive watch, by its shape. The closest published reading stops exactly there, suggesting it may be a Rolex Submariner like the big-crown reference Connery had begun wearing as James Bond two years earlier, while conceding the frames do not allow a definitive call. No other source documents the watch at all. So the honest call is a Submariner on the balance of evidence, with the Bond association doing some of the convincing, and nothing on screen sharp enough to settle the reference.
