In Jon Amiel's Entrapment (1999), Sean Connery plays Robert 'Mac' MacDougal, a legendary art thief, opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones as the insurance investigator who talks her way into his next job: a Chinese mask lifted from a Kuala Lumpur skyscraper, timed to the Y2K rollover, with Ving Rhames and Will Patton rounding out the crew. The watch the film puts in close-up on Mac's wrist is a Casio G-Shock, the bezel reading G-SHOCK and CASIO around a blue electroluminescent display counting toward midnight.
Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe built the first G-Shock in 1983 to a deliberately stubborn brief: survive a ten-meter drop, hold up to ten bars of water pressure, and run ten years on a battery. It is a watch made to be abused, which is the practical case for strapping one to a man who spends the film crawling through ducts and rappelling down shafts.
