Operation Market Garden was supposed to end the war by Christmas 1944. Instead it became the largest airborne disaster in military history. Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far (1977) assembles a cast large enough to populate a small country — Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Robert Redford, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman, James Caan, and a dozen more — to tell the story of the Allied attempt to capture a series of bridges in the occupied Netherlands. Connery plays Major General Robert Urquhart, who commanded the British 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem and was cut off from his headquarters during the battle's most critical hours.
Urquhart wears what appears to be an A.T.P. military watch. Army Trade Pattern was the standard British-issue designation for WWII service watches, supplied by a rotating group of manufacturers including Timor, Record, and Buren. They were built to a common military specification: luminous hands, black dial, and a case sized for legibility under field conditions. The specific manufacturer is not identifiable from the available promotional images, which show the ensemble rather than the watch in detail. If the prop department sourced an authentic A.T.P., any of the dozen licensed makers could be responsible.
