Scarlett Johansson wears a Michael Kors Runway Chronograph

Don Jon (2013) was Joseph Gordon-Levitt's first film, which he wrote and directed and starred in at thirty. He plays Jon Martello, a New Jersey guy whose week runs on a fixed loop: the gym, his church, Sunday dinner with his family, scrubbing his apartment, and pornography. Then he meets Barbara Sugarman. Scarlett Johansson plays her as the exact woman Jon has built in his head out of a thousand romantic comedies, a woman running a loop of her own, hers made of movies about the perfect man and the perfect life she is owed.

On Barbara's wrist, in the home-goods store where she has Jon wrapped around her finger, is a rose-gold watch with a chunky bracelet and a dial that glints. It is the watch of aspiration, the affordable-luxury kind, sold on the promise that you can buy your way toward the life in the advertisement. Which is Barbara exactly. She is a woman assembling herself out of what she has been told to want.

The watch is harder to pin down than she is. A crowdsourced site calls it a Michael Kors Runway Chronograph, the brand's signature piece, and the rose-gold glitz on screen fits that. But no watch authority has confirmed it, and the camera never quite gives you the dial. So the brand stays a good guess rather than a settled fact. It is, at least, exactly the watch the costume would have picked for her, which in a film this knowing about image is probably the point.
