In the first season of Succession, Shiv Roy leans over a snooker table in a wood-paneled library lined with leather-bound books, a tumbler of whisky in one hand. The other hand rests on the green baize beside the balls, and on that wrist is a small yellow-gold watch on a flat, fine-link bracelet, the case turned toward the inside of her arm. Sarah Snook plays Shiv, the only daughter of media patriarch Logan Roy and the Roy child everyone keeps underestimating in the fight to run the family company.
The watch is a Cartier. GQ's watch editor, writing about how the show sourced its watches, noted that Shiv wore Cartier through much of Succession's run, a habit that by his account rubbed off on her husband Tom Wambsgans while they were together. The one here is small and worn dial-inward, easy to miss unless you already know to look for it.
That is the point of it. Kendall wears a Richard Mille given to him by the watchmaker's own brand director. Roman pulls from a tray of IWCs, and Greg turns up in a Rolex Pepsi GMT. Shiv answers a family of loud watches with a gold Cartier you have to stand close to notice, the stealth-wealth move the show became famous for. Three seasons later the same costume team would put her in a steel Zenith Defy Midnight with a mother-of-pearl dial, a bigger watch you could read across a room.
