The scene is a flashback to the 1980s: four women on a bed in their old downtown clothes, laughing too hard to sit up straight. Sex and the City, the 2008 film Michael Patrick King wrote and directed from his own HBO series, dresses the joke head to toe. Charlotte wears a Coors bandana and an airbrushed sweatshirt, Samantha a gold sequined bustier, Miranda a rhinestone leopard suit, and Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw sits at the center in a tangerine skirt over a hot pink bra with a champagne flute in her hand. The costumes are the entire bit.

Every piece is chosen to be read, and Carrie's wardrobe is among the most catalogued in television, a closet fans and fashion writers have logged label by label down to the gold nameplate necklace and the Manolos. The watch is the exception. Both of her hands are in the open here, one pressed to her chest and one wrapped around the glass, and neither wrist carries anything the camera lets you read. The film never cuts in for a closer look.

The Bulgari gold watch people remember on Carrie is from the original series, not this movie. She wears it in the third episode, "Bay of Married Pigs," a decade before this bed full of borrowed 1980s clothes. No costume record names a watch for the film, and the frame gives nothing up. On this wrist, in this scene, there is no watch to identify.
