Before the makeover, before Michael Caine gets his hands on her, Gracie Hart sits at a bar in a dark button-up shirt with sunglasses hanging from the collar, looking like she'd rather be anywhere else. Sandra Bullock plays the FBI agent who goes undercover at the Miss United States pageant in Donald Petrie's 2000 comedy, and the early scenes work hard to establish how out of place she is in this world. Benjamin Bratt sits next to her as Eric Matthews, her fellow agent and eventual love interest, already looking more comfortable in a suit than Gracie does in anything.
On her left wrist is a dark-cased watch that fits the pre-transformation Gracie perfectly — functional, unfussy, the kind of thing a woman who eats pizza on the job and tackles suspects in parking lots would wear without thinking about it. The watch hasn't been identified, but its utilitarian appearance is part of the costume design's visual shorthand: this is someone who cares about whether something works, not how it looks. After Victor Melling's makeover, the watch likely disappeared along with the combat boots and the attitude, though the attitude came back.
