In a café, a married conductor leans across the table toward a young woman, threading an earbud toward her, a steel watch on the reaching wrist. Samuel Froler plays Adam in Pure, the 2010 Swedish drama Till det som ar vackert that introduced Alicia Vikander, here as Katarina, a troubled young woman from nothing who talks her way into a job at the concert hall and into an affair with Adam.
The film is Katarina's, a study of a girl using classical music and an older man as ladders out of her life, and the conductor is the charming, dangerous rung she climbs, generous until she stops being convenient. The watch is a steel sports piece on a dark strap, the unflashy good watch of a cultured man, but the dial does not resolve and no maker reads, so the brand stays unidentified.
Vikander won her first real notice here, five years before the Oscar for The Danish Girl, and Pure is where the rest of it begins. The watch belongs to the man she reaches toward and then has to escape, in a film about how far a person will climb, and over whom.
