Sam Shepard wears an unidentified watch

Sam Shepard stands in a Langley operations room with his hand on his hip, looking like a man who already knows how this ends. He plays Harlan Whitford in Daniel Espinosa's Safe House (2012), a CIA official managing the situation from Washington when Denzel Washington's Tobin Frost — a former agent turned traitor — walks into an American consulate in Cape Town after a decade off the grid. Ryan Reynolds plays the green safe house keeper assigned to babysit Frost, and when the safe house gets hit, the two end up running through Cape Town while Shepard and Vera Farmiga watch from conference rooms and try to figure out who sold them out.

Shepard's screen time is limited but pointed. Whitford is one of several senior officials with enough access and motive to be the mole, and Shepard plays him with the stiff authority of a man who has sat in government rooms for too long. A steel watch on a metal bracelet is visible on his left wrist, but it hasn't been identified. Whitford is not a field agent. He is a desk man. Whatever he wears would be unremarkable on purpose.
