Elisa Esposito turns her wrist to check the time and the camera comes in close: a small gold oval watch with a textured champagne dial and black baton markers, on a thin black strap against the cuff of her olive knit. Sally Hawkins plays Elisa in Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water (2017), a mute cleaner at a high-security government laboratory who falls in love with a captured amphibian creature and decides to help him escape. The film carried thirteen nominations into the 90th Academy Awards and left with four, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The Bulova identification hangs on a single thread. A product-placement tracking site posted four frames from the film in November 2017 under the title "Bulova Women's Watch Used by Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water," and the title is the entire claim: the post names no model, and a reader's comment asking which Bulova it might be went unanswered. The close-up frame does show a short line of text on the dial, the right length and position for a Bulova signature, but too soft to read outright. Beyond that one post, the record is silent; the published costume guides itemize Elisa's wardrobe down to the headbands without mentioning a watch, and no watch publication ever covered her wrist.
She is not the laboratory's only watch wearer. Michael Stuhlbarg plays Robert Hoffstetler, the scientist who is also a Soviet spy, and his wrist carries a Hamilton with its own story.
