Rishi Ramdani sits with a hand drawn up to his face, a navy blazer over an open white shirt, and his watch barely clears the jacket cuff: a wedge of polished steel, most of the case still under the sleeve. Sagar Radia plays Rishi in Industry as the loudest voice on the Pierpoint trading floor, a married-up gambler who treats every position like a dare and wants the room to hear about it.

The watch is a Rolex Sea-Dweller, the deeper-rated sibling of the Submariner, built for saturation divers with a helium escape valve and a seal good past a thousand meters. Industry's costume designer, Laura Smith, told Vulture it was a Sea-Dweller from 2001, meant to be the watch Rishi bought with his first bonus at Pierpoint. None of that engineering does anything in the City. The helium valve earns its keep in a decompression chamber, not at a desk, which is rather the point: it is more watch than the job needs, on a man who needs everyone to know it.

The shouting does not last. In the third-season episode 'White Mischief', deep in gambling debt, Rishi slides the Sea-Dweller across a table to his bookie and tells him he has decided he hates nostalgia. Smith says she picked a watch that would hurt to hand over, the kind he should have passed to his son. The show brings him back in season four still wearing a watch, now working as a for-hire researcher, and Smith made sure that this time it was no longer a Rolex.
