Guy wakes up in the same blue shirt every morning, pours the same coffee, and walks to the same window at the Free City bank, where, on schedule, players in sunglasses storm in to rob the place. He is a non-player character, a piece of background code in a massively multiplayer game, and he has no idea. Ryan Reynolds plays him in Shawn Levy's Free Guy (2021), the 20th Century Studios comedy in which a bank-teller NPC lifts a pair of those sunglasses off a robber, sees the game for what it is, and starts to wake up.

On his wrist is a Casio F-91W, the cheapest and most ordinary digital watch in the world. Casio has made it since 1989 and turns out around three million a year, which puts total sales north of a hundred million and makes it one of the best-selling watches ever built. It costs about fifteen dollars and runs for seven years on a single battery. Guy's whole costume is assembled from ordinary, off-the-rack pieces: a modified Member's Only jacket, Rag and Bone chinos, the blue shirt and tie of a bank teller, and the little black Casio. You catch it when he grips the handlebars of a motorcycle and when he walks the sidewalk in that blue jacket, a plain digital block on the wrist of a character built to blend in.
