Ryland Grace wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. The memories come back, and with them the mission: the sun is dimming, the Earth is running out of time, and Grace, a molecular biologist turned schoolteacher, is the one sent up to find out why and stop it. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the adaptation of Andy Weir's novel from a Drew Goddard screenplay, and through much of it Ryan Gosling wears a TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5: a smartwatch with a titanium case coated in black DLC, a matte black ceramic bezel, an OLED display, and a red rubber strap.

The placement is official. Gosling has been a TAG Heuer ambassador since 2021, and the brand partnered with Amazon MGM Studios to put the watch in the film, its campaign copy casting TAG Heuer as the company accompanying humanity's last hope. On screen the Calibre E5 turns up in the working stretches, the long solo runs of analysis and experimentation aboard the ship, and by TAG Heuer's own account it is one of the few companions Grace has left.

His real scene partner was a mop. Gosling spent most of the shoot acting opposite nobody, and by his account, somewhere around a hundred days in, he told Lord and Miller he needed someone to play against. They put glasses and a dress on a mop, named it Moppy Ringwald, and handed it over. Gosling said he spent the day dancing and singing and crying with her, and she made the final cut, on screen for the kind of moment you miss if you blink.
