Sebastian lives in the past on purpose. He plays jazz standards in a restaurant that wants pop, he drives an early-1980s Buick Riviera, and he wears a small mid-century Omega on a leather strap. Damien Chazelle directed La La Land (2016), a musical about a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress falling in and out of love in Los Angeles, and Ryan Gosling's Sebastian is devoted to a music that peaked half a century ago. The watch keeps faith with the rest of him.

What kind of Omega, exactly, is a question the watch world has never fully settled. Hodinkee's Danny Milton looked at it closely in 2022 and described a roughly 34mm, seemingly-gold Omega with applied 12-3-6-9 markers, central seconds, no sub-seconds, and a logo-only dial. He placed it "in the universe of a mid-century Omega Tresor," the brand's logo-only, time-only dress family from the 1940s and 50s, while admitting that "without seeing it in person, it is impossible to deduce exactly what this vintage piece is." Time+Tide had run the same problem six years earlier as an open call for help, guessing the watch was either a Seamaster or a Constellation off its distinctive lugs and conceding that it only lingers on screen "for a good second or two in a key scene." A retailer blog floated a Seamaster 600, then described that deep-sea diver as if it were the little gold dress watch on Gosling's wrist. Three expert reads, three different answers.

Strip the disagreement away and only a little is certain: the watch is a vintage gold Omega, almost certainly a 1940s-to-1950s dress piece, and the exact model is unsolved. That ambiguity suits the film. Costume designer Mary Zophres built Sebastian to refuse anything modern, and a watch nobody can quite date is the right object for a man whose entire personality is nostalgia. Oracle of Time read it simply as "a nice vintage Omega oversize manual wind," worn behind the wheel of that Buick, both pieces tuned to the same 1950s key as the jazz.

It helps that Gosling is a genuine vintage-watch person off screen, which makes a personal-collection pull at least plausible. During the 2016 and 2017 awards season he wore a Rolex Air King reference 5500 with an off-white dial and arrowhead markers, and he has turned up on the Cannes red carpet in a 1950s Omega Seamaster. None of that proves the La La Land Omega is his own, but it does mean the man playing the nostalgist is one in real life, down to the wrist.
